Seminal gospel-blues artist Blind Willie Johnson is regarded as one of the greatest bottleneck slide guitarists. Yet the Texas street-corner evangelist is known as much for the his powerful and fervent gruff voice as he is for his ability as a guitarist. He most often sang in a rough, bass voice (only occasionally delivering in his natural tenor) with a volume meant to be heard over the sounds of the streets. Johnson recorded a total of 30 songs during a three-year period and many of these became classics of the gospel-blues, including "Jesus Make up My Dying Bed," "God Don't Never Change," and his most famous, "Dark Was the Night -- Cold Was the Ground."

* Phase; This feature goes hand in hand with the sync feature. * Stereo Operation; The plugin works in Stereo!! There are four stereo modes :

*WaveForm Selection; You can modulate your sound with three different waveforms. An asymmetrical tremolo was modeled after a '65 Fender Vibrolux (brown face) to give you the fullest tremolo sound possible. A square wave can be utilized if you're after a harder sound. And if you're looking for a more normal tremolo, you can use the triangle wave setting.

* Tap Tempo; The Empress Trem averages your last four taps so it plays in sync with your music. You can also choose different tap to tremolo rate ratios. 1:1, 1:2, and 1:4 are available.

* Two Speed Mode; An exclusive feature to the Empress Trem. You're able to set two different rates, and switch between them using the tap tempo stompswitch. This is similar to playing through a Leslie cabinet and changing the speed.

* Rhythms; Another exclusive feature. The Empress Trem will definitely do your run-of-the-mill tremolo sound to a tee. But you can also set it to play different rhythms.

* Gain; A problem with most tremolos on the market is that when they're engaged, you hear a noticeable drop in volume. The Empress Trem solves this by having a gain stage on the output. It's able to deliver up to 6dB of gain to the signal.

Assuming former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl dreads the thought of forever being known as "the guy from Kurt Cobain's band," the last thing he'd want to hear is that the debut album from his new band Foo Fighters sounds much like one from the deceased duke of grunge. Unfortunately, Nirvana comparisons are not only inevitable, they're bound to consume the dialogue surrounding his quartet entirely. Perhaps it was unavoidable osmosis: Grohl, Foo Fighters' lead singer-guitarist, wrote most of these tunes during breaks from beat-keeping for his former band leader. It's natural that Cobain's knack for balancing hard and fast with musical and melodic would wear off on Grohl, as well as on band mates Pat Smear (who also played with Nirvana), William Goldsmith, and Nate Mendel (both of Seattle's Sunny Day Real Estate). Grohl even unveils vocal cords that tread lightly on Cobain's gorgeous growl. Of course, many Nirvana-be's have tried to capture Cobain & Co.'s teen spirit, and all failed; that Foo Fighters succeed in creating a powerful heavy rock album that's neither noisy nor stale is a measured accomplishment in its own right. So bask in the familiar neo-garage punk (a.k.a. grunge) of "I'll Stick Around," "Oh, George," and "Good Grief," because we certainly won't hear anything from the style's originator in the near future. And, who knows, you might even be surprised by Grohl's own pop chops on the mellow Byrds-like folk rock "Big Me" and catchy rave-up "This Is a Call." The Foo Fighters prove that even if you can't go home again, it sure is comfortable hanging out next door.

When I first got permission to proceed with the Hendrix book from Jimi's estate, I was thrilled by the prospect of working directly with Jimi's classic original recordings. Everybody is familiar with the legendary world of Jimi's fantastic public image, and the tremendous esteem in which he is held by musicians around the world, but I saw my chance to write a book dissecting his music to be an opportunity to delve into a private world never before explored. This book was the first of its kind, and I am very proud of the fact that I was there to bring the first exact note-for-note transcriptions of Jimi's music to a very hungry audience.

The very first minute I sat down to actually figure out Purple Haze I realized I was already submerged a very rarefied realm where I was no longer struggling with theory. My job was to interpret raw expression on the instrument by a master. I was already familiar with the boxes, but what I witnessed was the immediate transcendence of a student's perception. I was instantly transported into the world of relating a finished vision. As I worked to create each song's transcription, I knew that the student would also have an identical recording of Jimi's guitarwork on their desktop along side the book. This changed everything as far as my approach to teaching: the focus was now on the nuance of a prerecorded style. I could sense that I was using the same recordings that Jimi made famous in a brand new way. Privately making the book in my studio, I was the first party to realize that the cold transcriptions would serve as a sort of sterile compression, until they were opened at a future point in the student's world. Once "decompressed" the transcriptions would also be afforded the same specialized view into Jimi's world.

Accolades of praise could finally be set aside, and the real inside study of how Jimi used common scales could finally begin. It became obvious that I was involved in a very conscious study of a freely improvised "unconscious" application of style. Let me tell you, there were times when I sat there next to my Sony reel-to-reel and just stopped cold in wonderment at what I figured out. The veils had parted: I could see directly into his style. For a while, I knew that I was the only guy in the world that was officially sanctioned to translate Jimi's guitarwork. Just me, my earphones, and passing tones from a vision which evaporated years ago. Just me and Jimi.

What you can't tell from the cover is that the book also has an intense biography (I have a letter of congratulation from Noel Redding), a lead guitar primer, notes on how I transcribed the leadwork, notes on each song's key and chord sequence, and plenty of great artwork reflecting Jimi's unique world.

John Francis Anthony "Jaco" Pastorius III (December 1, 1951–September 21, 1987) was an American jazz musician and composer widely acknowledged for his skills as an electric bass player, as well as his command of varied musical styles including jazz, jazz fusion, funk, and jazz-funk. He is also regarded as one of the most skilled and influential bass players of all time.

His playing style was noteworthy for containing intricate solos in the higher register. His innovations also included the use of harmonics and the "singing" quality of his melodies on fretless bass. In 2006, Pastorius was voted "The Greatest Bass Player Who Has Ever Lived" by reader submissions in Bass Guitar magazine. He was inducted into Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame in 1988, one of only four bassists to be so honored (the others being Charles Mingus, Milt Hinton, and Ray Brown), and the only electric bassist to receive this distinction. In his 30s, Pastorius suffered from mental illness and substance abuse, and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1985. He died in 1987 from a physical beating sustained from a doorman while trying to gain entry into the Midnight Club in Fort Lauderdale at age 35.

His Death
After sneaking onstage at a Carlos Santana concert September 11, 1987, he was ejected from the premises, and he made his way to the Midnight Bottle Club in Wilton Manors, Florida. After reportedly kicking in a glass door after being refused entrance to the club, he was engaged in a violent confrontation with the club bouncer, Luc Havan. Pastorius was hospitalized for multiple facial fractures and damage to his right eye and right arm, and had sustained irreversible brain damage. He fell into a coma and was put on life support.

There were initially encouraging signs that he would come out of his coma and recover, but a massive brain hemorrhage a few days later pointed to brain death. His family decided on a majority vote to remove him from life support, even though his second wife Ingrid was against the decision. Pastorius died on September 21, 1987, aged 35, at Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale. His heart continued to beat for three hours after the life support machine was disconnected.

In the wake of Pastorius' death, Havan, a karate expert, was charged with second degree murder, but later pled guilty to manslaughter, for which he served four months. Pastorius was buried at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Cemetery in North Lauderdale.

Awards
Apart from his career in the jazz fusion band Weather Report, Jaco had two Grammy Award nominations for his self-titled debut album. He was inducted into Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame in 1988, one of only four bassists to be so honored (the others being Charles Mingus, Milt Hinton, and Ray Brown), and the only electric bassist to receive this distinction.

Playing style - Technique
The "Jaco growl" is obtained by using the bridge pickup exclusively, and plucking the strings right above the bridge pickup. Pastorius used natural and false harmonics to extend the range of the bass (exemplified in the bass solo masterpiece Portrait of Tracy from his eponymous album) and could achieve a horn-like tone through his playing technique. His playing techniques earned him accolades both from the critics and his audiences. He used finger-style playing exclusively, and was not fond of the slap bass style of many funk and R&B bassists of the time. His playing has been described by those who know him to be fast and showy, but always in time with the "groove."

About the Author
Charles Chapman is a professor in the Guitar Department at Berklee College of Music where he has taught since 1972. He is a versatile jazz guitarist with extensive performing and recording experience. Charles holds a Bachelor's degree from Berklee College and a Master's of Education from Cambridge College. He performed four tunes on the Mel Bay's compilation CD "Anthology of Jazz Guitar Solos" and all nine solos on the CD that accompanies the text "Guitar Solos" by George Van Eps (MB94822BCD) and has just released a solo CD titled "Come Sunset".

Charles has published eight texts with Mel Bay Publications and now performs on a regular basis at guitar shows and jazz festivals internationally. As a music journalist he has interviewed many of the most prominent guitarists in the field and is a frequent contributor to Guitar Player, Acoustic Guitar, Fender Frontline, 20th Century Guitar, Mel Bay's Guitar Sessions®, All AboutJazz, Dowbeat and Just Jazz Guitar magazines with over 400 published articles and reviews.
